Happy Friday!!!
my favorite day of the week!
we are enjoying the most amazing
late summer weather....mid 70's and
the air is a bit crisp......
it's the kind of weather that when you
walk outside...you can't help but take
note of the beautiful day....
ahhhhhh....nice fresh air.....
let's not even speak of what's coming....
in let's see...roughly 2 months
(if we're lucky...)
yes, that would be the r.a.i.n. and the
grey skies....that will last roughly
6-7 months....ugh....
that leads me to my idea/question/point...
grey walls.....
do you like them?
I do.
totally drawn to them....
we've got a very pale grey in our
master bedroom
shown below...
I have loved it...not regretted it one time...
but what about in our living room?
would it be too gloomy with all our grey skies
around here?
you might be able to see
that we now have a "parchment paper"
wall treatment....
I must've painted it 5 years ago at least...
it was quite the lengthy process...
plaster
base coat
top coat/glaze
that's why I haven't been a huge hurry to
repaint...
although I'm feeling the need for a greyish tone...
something like this would be perfect.....
oh my goodness....totally 2die4 yeah?
love it.
so back to my original question....
would grey walls work in the rainy nw??
or would it get gloomy??
cannot have g.l.o.o.m.y.
what do you think?
anyone have grey walls & grey skies??
I'd love to hear your thoughts!!
Hope you have an amazing weekend!
xoxo,
Shellagh

I am certainly no paint expert, so I hesitate to comment! However, you might take your clue from Scandinavian interiors since they deal with lack of light during their long, dark winters. Look at the light reflecting colors that they use. The books I have show "barely there" greys and many blue-grey colors in Scandi interiors, but nothing too dark.
Maybe a light warm gray - greige? I just painted my parchment living room walls, too. I have loved them for 9 years, and hesitated painting, too. I live in Texas, and we don't get a lot of rain here. I LOVE cloudy days, but I can understand your concerns. Keep it very light and warmish. Just dark enough to contrast with the white...

Love your light gray bedroom walls, would you share the color and also is it better to have a white trim color rather than off- white ?
You totally can. I'm from the NW (right near you) and the right gray will work just fine. We're currently living in Alaska where it's a dark for months at a time...the gray is really nice on my walls (I have SW Zircon painted in the living, kitchen and hallways).
Go for it!
Hi Shellagh,
I have gray walls throughout my home and I love them!! I did just paint 2 of my walls in my living room a muslin color and although it's a pretty color, I think I might go back to the gray.
It's cloudy here in So Cal today and I still love the gray walls!
Hope you have a great weekend.
Sincerely,
Melinda
I think that some of the new grays are very pretty and add softness and loveliness to a room no matter how gloomy it is outside.
Shellagh I'm sure you will create a pretty room no matter what color you choose.

I've wondered about this myself...we don't have as much rain as you but we do have long winters without sun. I don't need anything to make me gloomy...I can get there all by myself:)...I kind of like the idea of the comment about Scandinavia...white with touches of grey. The hardest part will be covering over your hard work...after that it's just a gallon of paint!

Go for it...I love grey..with all your pretty things and lots of white it wil be stunning!!!
My daughter is thinking of going grey. I think it is lovely--and it looks good with the blues I like to incorporate. Have fun!
I am a grey lover...it is so calming to me. I don't paint my walls...never have in all three homes weve had. I leave all walls white. But my color palette is white, grey, natural, woods...driftwood being the favored. I say do it! I think your living room would be beautiful with grey walls.
I was always a grey hater until I painted my kitchen grey and now I love it. I think you need a pale, warm grey. J
Hi
I had the same colour walls as your drawing room and I'm also a huge fan of grey...in our room I've changed the walls from cream to Farrow and Ball's 'skimming stone' to beautiful effect...it's a off white infused with grey and beige producing the colour of a beach pebble and it lightens rather than darkens the room whilst really showing the beauty of the off white sofas...

I love grey walls darling !!..great pictures !!!...love from me...xxx..
i can understand why you'd pause in making this decision since you already put all that work into/onto your walls...but i am soooo loving the grey! ;}
m ^..^
I love the gray on gray. It gives a peaceful, calming feeling to me. I'm always a bit melancholy, but it's who I am. I think you have to always go with what you like first. I changed some things and now want my original white on white back. I will get that soon!
I just found your blog but follow you on facebook and love your pics! Before you paint your wall why not get yourself a big sheet of plasterboard and paint it in your choosen colour? Thats what I did with our home as the colour can vary with sun from room to room. I used the same paint throughout our home yet it looks alot warmer in the front sitting room as we do not get allot of sun. If its a very dull room maybe you can add a touch of green to the grey (it might sounds weird but we added a touch of green to our exterior for warmth. In the end I'm sure you will make the right decession for you :) Siobhan.
I love gray too, and your bedroom is a beautiful example of why I do! That is stunning! I have a can of gray here to try but just haven't found the time yet, it's a very light color for the peaceful effect that your room gives. No advice from me though, only you know how your bedroom color makes you feel during the rainy season. Have a fabulous week! t.xoxo
I live on Vancouver Island and we have plenty of grey days. My house is painted in shades of blues and greys, much like Scandinavian homes, and I love it. I don't find the grey depressing at all. I do tend to warm up the rooms with some deeper tones in the winter - a ruby red throw, or some pillows.
It will be fun to see what you decide on.
I recently painted my bedroom "Shadow Gray" and I love it. Of course, I'm painting all the furniture Mythic brand base white. And i put a dark red spread and matching 24" square pillows on the bed.I dragged them back from a french street market, then found i could buy them from a catalog right here at home. But they came from france and that counts for a lot with me. .The small upholstered easy chair will be covered in a dark patterned red fabric. And the adjoining bath, with its pink porcelain looks great with pink and gray tile effect vinyl flooring and the towels, curtains, & rugs in white, pink, and gray work well. The gray walls change color as the light changes in the room. Sometimes it looks dark green,or dark blue, other times it's just gray. It's soothing and calm and the gray makes me feel good. But it took a while to find just the right gray. I didn't know there were so many shades. Try gray on one wall and see how you like it. I knew right away when i had the wrong one. The place looked like a patchwork quilt before i settled on Shadow. BM paint, i think. Not home at the mo' to check.
