~peonies and roses~

hello friends!

one of my biggest delights of the whole year....
is my one & only peony bush.

once a year it blooms.....the most spectacular blooms I think I've ever seen.....

the scent is intoxicating....and fills the whole room....

why I only have 1 bush is a very good question....
I really need to find room for some more...

the only huge bummer w/ peonies is that they sadly only bloom once a year :-(

but I am so thrilled when they bloom!

my other new love in the garden.....
which I've already shared w/ you

is my David Austin roses....
...oh my gosh....they are sheer heaven!
I have 2 climbing "heritage" roses
and this is the first year they have really done
a  n  y  t   h   i   n   g...

but it has so been worth the wait~
there are tons & tons of buds
and they open up to the most beautiful rose
that smells 2die4!!

I tried to cut blooms that were inconspicuous...
because I need to enjoy them on the bush as well...

there is nothing better than being out on my patio and catching their scent in the breeze...

it's so much fun to play around with different
vases and settings....

moving on to the rest of the house....
the next rose is an "iceberg floribunda"

I have to admit ~ when I bought the bush
I had no idea what floribunda meant...
....little bunches of roses is what it means...

so I snipped a few and played with this
cute little metal basket I found
 at a yard sale~

this is currently sitting on Kenzie's dresser~
her room is coming together....
but I still need to do her flooring.....
the biggest job of all.......shoulda done it first........
do the finishing touches!

I've painted the walls, doors, trim and dresser 3 times actually~ and hung window coverings
and made 3 pillows.....
but it's missing a little something....
like flooring....

this cute little chair was outside, but I'm kinda
liking it in her room right now....

ok...back to roses....
I have a climbing "new dawn" rose bush
that has been limping along.....
it has just not loved the monsoons wet
weather we've had....

but I managed to snip a few of her blooms
and salvage them for a bit~
there were a few that looked decent....

I'm off to get some work done ~
lots to do upstairs and I'm
determined to tackle a bunch of it this week!

have a wonderful week!!

xo,

Shellagh

  12. Your photos of your peonies and roses are spectacular! Just gorgeous! I am in mourning...the ONE and only peony bush I have did not flower this year. Last year it flowered (first year) with beautiful blooms, but nothing this year. It had buds and then they were gone. I am so sad. :( Enjoy yours for me okay?? lol

It really is a shame they have such a short blooming period, but wow! What an impact they make in that short time!

I'm trying to get things done this week too! Gotta go out and plant some flowers I bought yesterday. Weather is good. Hope you have sunshine and here's to a productive week for both of us : )

I feel your pain (I am by Puyallup).. getting to have a coupkle days of blue skies has so helped! My poor roses are rotting before they even open!

  30. I wish peonies bloomed all summer. I really like the color you have which is what I thought I purchased our are a deep deep pink. We have a petite David Austin Anne Boylen rose that does well and a white Glamis castle that produces 2-3 tiny blooms when it should be dozens. Maybe it needs more sun.

The rose that I love is Enfant La France it reminds me of peonies and the scent is great.

I think we have an iceberg the edges have just a flush of pink. It just got done with it's first bloom and looks horrid but I love that bush. Of course you saw my new favorite a pink Eden we got five blooms finally.

  31. I hear you! Peonies, David Austin roses and Iceberg are three of my garden "must-have's"! Yours are just lovely :)

  32. Well we waited a long time for our peonies on the west coast this year, didn't we, but it sure was worth the wait!! My bush is just finishing now, I've cut the flowers as soon as they've started to bloom as it has been so wet I decided to rescue them and enjoy them inside. I think today was my last harvest, till next year anyway...

  33. Your peonies are beautiful, so are your roses! I also have a few rose bushes, their perfumey (if that's a word) fragrance are so sweet.

  34. Shellagh, you are most definitely blessed in your corner of the world with a ROSE CLIMATE!!! See, there is a silver lining to all of that inclement weather that you've had, and it's called roses roses roses {and briefly, peonies, of course}! Love all the creative ways that you brought them indoors. I keep hearing about David Austin's on so many blogs, but not sure they'd survive in the upper Midwest?? Hope you are making strides on all of your projects..... I've got a list a mile long, myself : )
    Happy Tuesday! xx Suzanne

Your flowers are amazing! You must be enjoying them very much. This makes me very excited, as I've noticed buds on my David Austin rose bush that I thought had died. I can't wait for the blooms. Your photographs are so beautiful...a great way to start my day!
    Have a great week.

I wonder why we can't grow them out here in SO CAL . . . must be too hot.
Loved this post. I am so glad you shred!

  38. Wow, love them. I love peonies too... unfortunately mine bloomed right when it was raining a lot, so even when I brought them in the house they got brown splotches...oh well, next year... I loved living vicariously through yours.

  39. Ponies! My favorite! My one little bunch here in Texas is long done. But I was just up north in the mid-west and they were going strong, so I got to enjoy them longer. Parting was such sweet sorrow.

  41. Gorgeous, just absolutely gorgeous. I love peonies too. Do you touch up your photos at all, because your flowers are just a stunning pink :) Roses are also my favorite flower. I have 12 roses and 5 of them died this spring from all of the silly up and down temps.
    Have a wonderful week.

  42. You asked me about my painted floor. I really like it, and it is easy to clean. But of course, if you have white painted floor (like I have) the dirt is more visable, so maybe you have to clean more often. But I think it is worth it!

    Wish you a nice week
