~loveseat slipcover DONE~

Good morning everyone!

 It is a very rainy, nasty day in the great NW...buckets of rain..... I mean   b u c k e t s    o f      r a i n.....but no worries, it just means it's a perfect day for indoor projects & a nice cup of peppermint tea!

I am so happy to report that I finally finished the slipcover for the loveseat in my living room.  For new followers to my blog.....it's embarrassing to actually admit how long it has sat there! (click here to read original post and see just how long it's been sitting..ok I just checked and yep it's embarrassing...)... she has been sitting dressed in scraps and unfinished while the sofa has been all finished & looking lovely.

~remember on the confessions about myself....if not you can go here to get all the dirt.... something to do with starting too many projects...

well, here she is....ok...I am not going to act like it was a cinch & I love doing these....no, I'm not going to dwell on how many hours last week I worked on it.....(roughly 25ish at least) or how many times I went to that wretched a certain fabric store where the cutting counter ladies are so grouchy pleasant.  Or why I  had to keep going back but, here's a clue....measure 8 times cut once......

Yep, measure more than one time before you cut roughly 130 linear inches of 8 inch strips of fabric for the skirt!!! Oh, and double that because I also miscut roughly 130 linear inches of the skirt lining too..........And I am not a seamstress, by any stretch, so it wasn't until the second time around of cutting the skirt that I wised up and quadrupled the thickness of the fabric so I wasn't cutting each strip individually...(maybe a blonde thing..perhaps...)  But I do have a handy quilting board & rotary cutter

these are major necessities for this sort of project!  I actually made a couple wingback chair slipcovers a few years ago

These were made without any such tools, and don't look too close, because you can totally tell how uneven they are.........I sold these on craigslist when I got my "new" furniture.  I didn't do piping on these because I was way too nervous to even attempt it on my first try of slipcover making!

So for my sofa & loveseat covers, I used 2 books to help me through.  One did a great job of explaining certain parts but not others so hence the need to purchase both.

I did do piping this time and seriously guys~ it is totally do-able! I was just determined to use it because to me it really makes it look so finished & professional (well you know...as close to it as a newbie can get)

You know the hardest part for me was doing these crazy pleats!!!!

I tell ya, it was probably my technique.......but they gave me fits!!! The whole pin it upside down while lining it up perfectly and making sure it doesn't hang down too far in the back thing and don't forget it's even better on the corners where you have to also line it up with the piping....argh.  Other than that it was a breeze...  smiley face...

looking at this picture really makes me think that I shoulda ironed it before putting it back on & before showing all of you!  Oh well...it's linen so ironing is fairly futile. although it would've been kind of nice to at least press the pleats....did I ever mention my impatientness?

so before...well during rather....

and after...

Well, what do you think?  I am pretty happy with the way it turned out.  (now if  you look super close you will see that I have not trimmed the excess seam fabric on inside of the cushion cover....after wrestling w/ it to get it on --- I realized I had forgotten...so....in a couple days or something....I'll do it. ) I am so glad to be finished w/ it!  What a relief!  Now on to the next of many projects to finish!

But...before you go!! I have a question for you!
I have been totally loving all the burlap-y- ticking-like pillows I've seen at some blogs and really want to either make some or buy some from some of you bloggy shop girls, but until then....do you like the above look w/ creamy & white & toile & crocheted pillows together or do you like this?

You know, ignore the chocolate brown pillows...I just put them there to see, but I don't really like them.  But do you like the vintage blanket in the reddish tone?  I'm thinking I don't.  Too much color for me....I don't know...I was looking for a vintage blanket in a rich creamy/ cable type fabric or a grayish one but this was all I could find (in my price range) at Monticello last Friday.

Here is one fabulous pillow I found:

gray flannelish/ old blanket type fabric with the lace....love it.

here's another one that was so cute

So let me know your thoughts...about the whole pillow/blanket thing on the loveseat

Next post I will take you shopping with me so you can see all the wonderful stuff at Monticello Antique Mall!

See you then!

  1. OH~~~~ How I wish I could make slip covers for my couch. I have them covered already but they need a uplift. You did such a beautiful job. Do you someone who very seldom VERY SELDOM sews could sew these covers?
    Have a beautiful day,

  2. It looks gorgeous! I am crazy about the shape of that loveseat to begin with, but the slipcover looks fantastic. I have that same book, "Slipcover Style." Great book. Don't look too closely at my slipcovers either. And I'm ok with that. If I want it to look perfect I would pay tons of money and have it reupholstered. But, I'm cheap and I want something changeable and washable, so I slicover. Love it. Good job!

  3. gorgeous slip covers - I LOVE the creamy white linen. Please don't cover it up too much with the blanket. You did an amazing job, love your blog. Lori

  4. So beautiful and romantic. I'm not much on the red throw and I like the toile pillow and creme pillows the best. I think it should be very soft and be sure and add your new pillows. It's going to look yummy.

Come see me on my blog. I just found yours and I love it.

  5. Clever, clever, clever girl!!!
Well worth the time and trouble :)
You should make your own cushions, pretty as the lace and burlap are you could do them easily too.
I'd love a loveseat...alas no more room anywhere!
I'm sending some sunshine to you from a sunny spring morning here in Melbourne, Australia.
And do drop by my blog ~ I have a give-away going and I'd love for you to be in it :)

  8. Awesomeness!!! I LOVE it...and it's inspiring me to get busy with making my own slipcovers again. I'm not very good at it, and it *is* so frustrating sometimes, but how great to see something made with your own two hands!
Great, great job. And I like the lighter shades on the couch....:o)

  9. Shellagh,

You did a fabulous job!! I think the time & effort was well worth it. I envy your talent. I am just learning to use a machine so I am in awe of all of the 'seamstresses' here in blogland (and yes, you are one!!).

I can see why you thought of a gray throw, the pillow is fantatic. I love the new fabrics that are being used; flannel, burlap... just beautiful. I wonder if burlap is hard to work with...I like the first look. I don't think red shows off the classiness of the loveseat.

Love, love love the slipcover and loveseat. (clapping!). Have a great week!

  10. Hmmm...let me see...first off I LOVE how your slipcover turned out...Bravo! The red throw doesn't really do it for me...I think {like you mentioned} a gray or camel colored throw would look wonderful...and as for pillows...I'd go with a mix of ticking and something with a nubby texture...instead of a lot of color....I'd get interest using different textures. Okay...now I'm just rambling...can't wait to see what you decide.

  13. Shellagh words cannot express how totally impressed and in awe I am of you!!! That slipcover looks fabulous!!!!! I could not have done that! I paid someone to make mine, and while she was very reasonable I didn't have the satisfaction of doing it myself. You go girl!!! LOL! Okay, really fabulous. As far as pillows go... make your own burlap pillow. easy. sew on some lace...easy. add some vintage buttons or jewelry... easy, easy. And I found out burlap is washable! You can find it at Jo Ann or Hobby Lobby. I prefer the neutral soothing colors to the high contrast of the red... That's it. No more rambling. Have a great week!

This is so wonderful though...I dought you ever get tired of it!
I really love the gray flannel...it's really cool...but I love burlap and use it on everything...It's just not as comfortable as other fabrics.
You are awesome...for completing this and even more amazing because it looks so professional.

    Have a wonderful week...donna

Can you make me some chair covers for my dining room chairs now, pleeeease, I'm just kidding but if you really want to let me know(; Now about the couch/blanket decision, I like the first pic better, if you want some color, I have to tell you I found some pretty red/off white toile pillows by Waverly at Homegoods,I love them, they are a longer pillow and have a pleated ruffle at each end.

  17. you did a lovely job on the slipcover. I also have that second book you posted. I have been reading it all summer over and over again. I am still too chicken to even try the darn thing for my wing chair. I plan on using drop cloth as my fabric so no love loss with expensive fabric, but just intimidated I guess.
i think a ticking and toile pillow would look fabulous on there.

I had a linen slipcover made for my sofa and I love it but I will bet you saved lots of money by making it yourself AND you can say you did it yourself too. Burlap pillows will look great. You found some cute ones, I am working on upholstering a settee with burlap and fabric and also a chair right now. I will be posting it on my blog too. I like the throw in red alot but the burlap thing is way HOT now. Try it!

I'm literally in love with your loveseat and the fab slipcover you made. I do have some sewing skills but could never ever make a slipcover - not even dare make an attempt. I think I'll try to sell mine on your fav, Craigslist! My friend actually made me one for the chair, which I posted about today. I will probably cut it up and use it as a pattern. Still not sure about the piping though! You had mentioned before that you had an idea for my sofa? Check out the info on the wrinkle product on my post.
