~the ugly black chair & where did the bench go?~

hello my friends!

as per tradition....the weather report....

must I?

really though, I don't want to depress you all....

ok......well since I know you are just dying to know & since I know you can't get this information anywhere else....
it's 60 and raining....again....

for at least 2 solid months...

well no basically since October

Only the last 8 months.  But who's complaining..... not me....;)

so what to do when it's raining non-stop?

slipcover an ugly black chair!

well, I sit on the ugly black chair everyday while I visit with you & frankly.....it is ugly....
and my sewing machine is only 10 feet away....
fabric 11 feet away...
and the family was away for at least 3 hours....
so off I go!

and here's how it went....

cut leftover dropcloth fabric and drape over chair
{absolutely NO measuring here....no time for that!}

hem around the back opening....

pin on ruffles all the way around....

decide I don't much like my creation/design....
and seek out seam ripper....

tear out hair ruffles & start over.....
watch the time.....1 hour left....till family is back...
why am I racing? I don't really know....

sew on ruffles all the way around....
this time w/ no pleats....

much better....

so what next?

look around for more things to slipcover
relax?.......not a chance....

take another look at Kenzie's room....
and decide I can't walk by it any longer
or close the door so I can't see it any longer...
~and~
decide where to put the pink bench!!

as much as I hate to show you this....
I feel I must so you can be absolutely sure that
I am justified in my project A.D.D.

ya see?
ghastly right? ugh...
I purposely did not super size the picture
to spare your little eyes...

but being the "good mom" that I am....
{all that autonomy stuff you read about....ya know...}
I let my daughter pick her paint a couple years ago...
and tonka truck or school bus yellow  a very pleasant buttery yellow is what she picked...

it was time for a change....and she wanted it too...
so here's what we've got so far....

fresh painted walls....
and

some "custom" made pillows by her in house
seamstress.....

some found accessories....

repainted a couple ghastly colored shutters....

eww....

find perfect spot for this lovely....

can you catch my OUR vision?

I'm working feverishly to finish but so far
it is looking soooooo much better!!!

one more thing before I go.....

I have been one lucky gal lately....

this is the best french decorating magazine....of course!
and all these fun french things...maps, buttons, postcards and a divine smelling
lavender sachet....
and an awesome vintage french grain/burlap sack from a giveaway

and

this super adorable vase/measuring glass

swedish facial soap, lavender bath salts, and a yummmmmmy smelling candle in this 2die4 cute little basket and a beautiful vintage map of France.....from Tricia at Morning T!

wow ~ thanks so much guys!
talk about feeling like Christmas!!!
 I am just thrilled!

well I'm pretty sure this might be about the longest post EVER so I will sign off for now....

have a great weekend!

xo,

Shellagh

  2. Beautiful! Found your blog... well blog hopping. The layout/trim work/ closet doors in your daughter's room look just like my daughter's room, however my daughter has an ugly shade of pink in there. LOL

And as one who also lives here in the Pacific Northwest, well I too am VERY TIRED of the rain. Ready for some consistent sun! I feel your pain/blah.

  3. you are definitely Queen of the chair covers Shellagh! Have you noticed it is only us poor souls stuck with the rain that are so obsessed with the weather!!
We actually saw the sun today, yipee! Was out gardening in a flash:-)

  4. Look at it this way Shellagh, if it was sunny you'd be outside soaking up the rays and having fun instead of accomplishing all this great decorating stuff, and why did I feel like I was watching a super-hero with the speed dial turned up?!!
Sun is overrated. It just makes you sweat. ha ha,
    xo,

  5. Hi Shellagh, I cant believe that I have pretty much the exact same chair and made covers almost identical to yours! great minds think alike!!1 Your daughters room sounds like it is going to be gorgeous when its finished! Why do we let them choose paint colours??? such a bad idea! they always pick the very opposite of what we would want them to have!
    Have a gorgeous weekend,

  8. Wow Shellah, looks like you and Debra (Common Ground) have been winning all the good stuff! I'm jealous....but congrats!
I also have an ugly chair that I need to make slipcover for...so once again, you've inspired me! So here's a question...how do you make your pleats? Do you measure them out, pin and baste or does your machine do that for you? Sadly enough, my sewing machine is 35 years old and does good to sew, reverse and occasionally zig-zag.

Well, I hope you have a great weekend and maybe the sun'l come out tomorrow!

    Blessings,
    Susie

  13. have you thought about painting the base of your chair white with a plastic save spray paint? I find the base is awful harsh agains the soft ruffle...

  14. OMG, that's the cutest chair transformation ever!
Love those ruffles and thanks for the tutorial.
You make it look easy, but I know better! LOL

Your daughter's room looks lovely. That pink bench is perfect and the pillows are over the top pretty!

Your blog is funny too. I know how much fun it is working with our kids on their bedrooms. Their ideas and ours don't always agree.

I love, love, love how your chair turned out. It is amazing what a huge difference a little fabric can make. I love it. Ooooo, and I also love the "Bonjour" pillow. Did you make that as well? Anyways, congratulations on your giveaway wins. Have a fantabulous weekend.

  26. Hey Shellagh... your chair slip cover is just perfect. I love how you made it, you made it sound so simple! Know the frustration of ripping out mistakes, ah, such is the life of a seamstress!
You beat me to it on this project, ha ha! I actually sit on a desk chair just like yours in my laundry room when I sew. I dream of slip covering it, but there are too many more important things to do.
Loving Kenzie's room and I DO catch your vision. All your visions and beautiful finished projects are floating around in my mind's eye while I sleep! Keep on inspiring us all, Shellagh!
    xoxo!

  27. Another great makeover. You make it seem so easy. We might need to get together and you can give me some lessons. I did get some great linen fabric(40%off at Joanne's) and some premaid ruffle fabric. I'd like to recover a bench with it or maybe even some pillows.

Have a great weekend and pray for the sun.

  38. Us chair obsessed girls have to stick together! I think your daughter's room will be totally fab without any autonomy whatso ever! I love it already. I am much cheered by your attitude to feel the fear and do it anyway slip covering! I tried this approach myself, inspired by your ottomans i think, and I am pleased with the result!

  41. Shellagh! Lucky girl! I met Tracey at the Na-da farm sale, she is as sweet as this little giveaway that you won! And Tricia is a dear, as well! Haven't met her, yet.....But am heading to Texas next spring, so who knows : ) I LOVE what you did with all of your decorating projects. You are so handy with the slips and reupholstering and I'm quite envious! You REALLY have accomplished quite a bit during the soggy weather. I know, my mom is even pulling her hair out a bit, and she normally doesn't mind the rain. She did send me a pic of their peonies in bloom, today, so guess that is a GOOD sign for your part of the country. Keep on showing us your inspired ideas ~ love 'em!
